Auto maintenance: windshield wiper blades and window glass
Cars aren’t clever, in fact they have no intelligence at all. The only thing that they're capable of doing is moving. Sure some cars pretend to be intelligent and use their GPS systems to shout at you and direct you to where you want to go. The basic car has no idea where it’s going, even if it has a GPS system I doubt it knows where it’s going really, I swear mine just makes things up sometimes! Anyway, you need to be the brain and it is your own eyes that will direct the car where you want to go, so it’s extremely important that your windshield wipers and window glass permit you to do that and have a good look at the road.
Your driving vision depends on two main things, your windshield and your wiper blades. Your windshield is made out of glass, and I’m sure we all know how fragile glass is. Your windshield is susceptible to chips, scratches, cracks and more. This is especially true in winter when you are forced to drive behind those gritting trucks! If you get a chip in your windshield it doesn’t mean that you have to replace the whole thing, it is possible to repair the chip, or rather it is possible for a specialist to repair the chip. Avoid self glass chip repairs as it is quite difficult to do and its only $25 or so to have a specialist do it perfectly.
If you get a chip in your windshield then water can get inside the glass, if this water freezes it can expand and break the glass making the chip worse. Chips weaken the strength of the windshield and large chips and cracks could literally cause your windshield to cave in when you travel at high speeds due to loss of structural integrity. Therefore, it’s important to get any chips, deep scratches and cracks dealt with as soon as possible. Chips and such sealed and repaired by a professional will be impervious to water and dirt and thusly are practically invisible and very hard to spot after a successful repair.

Glass also gets pretty dirty, you have to clean it to be able to see out of it. When you’re driving your car the number of insects that squish against your windshield is amazing, honestly I never knew there were so many bugs around! This added with any salt and grease that seems to accumulate on your windshield from nowhere needs to be cleaned off! You can get oily residue on your windshield just from following a car with an oil leak or that is burning oil (blue tinted smoke).
To clean your windshield you can use your washer jets and windscreen wipers. To maintain this you need to make sure that the windscreen washer bottle is topped up, it’s a good idea to add some anti-freeze solution in the winter so that the water doesn’t freeze on your windscreen. Frozen water on the windshield can actually be much worse than the dirty windshield. Whenever it’s cold you always think “Should I, shouldn’t I” before you try out the windscreen wash, if it freezes on your windshield you’ve got a huge problem! It’s a good idea to routinely clean the insides and outsides of all your cars window glass. This is what you see through and all it takes is that one day where the sun glares off a dirty or dusty portion of your windshield and your safety is in jeopardy (according to numerous police blotters across the country, this next to ineffective and worn headlights, is one of the leading causes of accidents).
