We've talked a lot about cloudy headlights in previous articles but there's another similar problem that can be just as bad or even worse because it affects you also during the daytime. Do you know what it is? It's your taillights on your car or truck and they're made of plastic and most of the time they do not have the UV inhibitors or the UV protection coat that is sometimes applied to car headlights. So they cloud up, oxidize, and basically become opaque and hard to see through.
Now where this becomes a real problem during the daytime is with your brake lights. Have you been driving in traffic and almost hit someone because you didn't think their brake lights were on? Or maybe they were just too dull to see? Nine times out of 10 this is where that problem comes from. Rarely does a bulb fade or become less bright. Usually the case with a bulb, whether it be for the taillights or the headlights, is that their either on or their off. Either they work or they don't. There really isn't much of an in-between here.
So if your taillights have suffered from oxidation from the sun and its harsh UV rays and from weathering which is common specially in the South and West in hotter climates where the sun just literally bakes your car. Once the taillights start to oxidize the amount of light emitted becomes greatly reduced just like with the headlights. Now the differences are that headlights are only needed at night or obviously during periods of inclement weather, whereas taillights which include your brake lights, backing up lights, rear turn signals and more are needed all the time when you are driving - 24 hours a day.
Clean and restore worn and ugly headlight lenses to new again with New Lite - the best in headlight restoration you can get!
If your taillights are affected by oxidation and cloudiness then the correct amount of illumination or the luminance as they refer to it that shine through the lens will not be appropriate enough for someone to safely see you at safe distances and to see what you're doing. If someone else cannot see that you're backing up or cannot see that you have your brakes applied they may not be able to stop in time or to avoid hitting you.
Now a simple test to see if your taillights are oxidized and off to the point or you need to consider replacement or restoration of them is to rub your fingers over them. Are they smooth or are they ruff? And how ruff are they if they are rough? The rougher the field your fingers the more serious level of oxidation has been reached in obviously the greater the loss in light output through your taillight lenses.

So plan on spending $70 to $200 in additional labor charges. So to replace your taillights could easily cost over $500.
