It happens everywhere from Jacksonville Florida to New York and from Atlanta Georgia to Los Angeles California.  Illegal street racing and drifting (the newest off shoot of this street racing and showing off of ones driving skills) is an increasingly growing problem that attracts teenagers and young adults in droves.  It can be as simple as two cars reving up at a red light or stop sign to multiple cars zipping down the high way in formation making rapid, high speed lane changes.  In any case it is highly dangerous and puts innocent pedestrians and drivers in harms way.

Drifting which is the idea of controlled sliding when rounding corners to straight out street racing and dragging is not necessarily a bad thing if done right – off the road on designated tracks.  Legal car racing has been with us since the automobile was first produced.  There’s stock car racing, Formula one, IMSA, drag racing, etc…  They are all dangerous, but people partaking in these forms of racing and their fans understand this.  Measures are taken at these tracks and events to better protect both the drivers and the spectators.

The problem with illegal street racing is that there are little if any measures taken to protect and/or prevent tragedy on the open road.  Look at what has happened recently with Hulk Hogan’s son and his drifting accident.  His friend is in critical condition and his father now faces a huge lawsuit all because he wants to take his drifting and illegal street racing to the street and not keep it on a track where it belongs.  This is one thing I must admit that NASCAR and some of the other race venues like Formula one have gotten much better about and that is dealing with their race car drivers.  We don’t see news anymore of NASCAR drivers racing through the streets like they did in the earlier days like in the movie Days of Thunder.

The problem nowadays is the movies that the younger generation watches and their video games which popularize this illegal street racing and drifting.  They make it look cool to run amok through town and cause mayhem.  Especially with the games – you can run into and kill bystanders or even yourself and you just have to press play again to start over.  In real life you do not get a second chance.  If you kill yourself or someone else that never goes away.  I think it’s a great thing that some businessmen like Bruton Smith of the Charlotte Motor Speedway, Sonic Automotive Group and Speedway Motorsports have taken the time to create drag strips and race tracks like the new one in Concord North Carolina where these youths can partake in these racing activities in a controlled and protected atmosphere.
