Staged car accidents are on the rise - Don't let it happen to you

Write down names and drivers info of all people involved (and take pictures too). You wouldn’t believe how many of these staged fraud accidents have new opportunists trying to add themselves to the accident after the fact. Especially if it looks really good (big pocket elderly driver driving alone and fully insured). Just look at the reasoning behind almost every municipality adding video cameras to city buses and other city vehicles. This is to protect the city from opportunists jumping on and saying they were apart of an accident when they were really just a bystander. Never rely solely on the police report. The police see a lot of accidents and are human so they could easily make an innocent mistake. There are also corrupt police, lawyers and doctors out there so protect yourself and write it down and take pictures – its your right to protect yourself.
And above all else, call the police to any and all accidents. The police are impartial and are trained to determine the direction of impact and to see through fraudulant claims (be sure to tell them what you think as in many departments the officer must alert his superiors if fraud is mentioned and this must be noted in the report). It is impossible to avoid all instances of staged car accident fraud, but by taking as many steps as possible to protect yourself you will greatly lower the chance of it happening to you and you may even stop it from occuring to someone else. Fraud is illegal regardless if its from staged car accidents, identity theft, welfare fraud, etc… We need to do what we can to protect ourselves, be aware it exists, take it seriously and help put a stop to it as it costs all of us in the way of ever increasing insurance premiums.
