Wait for the police officer to tell you to get your registration, etc… Also, don’t offer anything. He may have just pulled you over to tell you your brake light is out or your plate is unreadable. Whay would you just start out saying you are sorry for doing 80 in a 55? Let the cop tell you that. Once the police officer has told you that there was a speeding infraction, do not argue with them. Be apologetic and sincere. Maybe your baby was crying uncontrollably in the back seat, maybe you have had a very bad day, tell the officer, but make sure you sound sincere. If you cannot do this, then just shut up. If you have no other recent infractions they will most likely offer to reduce the speed to make it a lower violation resulting in no points to your license. You will still have to pay court costs and such. They may also decide to drop it if they think you have a strong case as to why you weren’t speeding – this probably won’t happen. You can also take it to court and fight it yourself, but this is not advisable as you will most likely lose (most judges will find for the police officer regardless if they were right or wrong).
