Some may not let you in without a dealers or wholesalers license, but many will let you walk the lot and meet the sellers and buyers.  You can also meet the wholesalers and dealers in the parking lot and at the main entrance - use your good judgement here.  A great idea is to go to the closest restaurant on sales days for the afternoon (especially informal buffet restaurants so you can easily hobsnob with the dealers and wholesalers).  Also ask around in your own circles – ask at your church, etc… 

I am sure you will find a nice car dealer that would be willing to give you a little knowledge and maybe even take you under their wing.  If you are nice and seem genuine most car dealers and wholesalers probably would let you tag along and probably wouldn’t mind the company (they can get you a door or gate pass to get you in – you just can’t bid on cars).  Some may even let you buy and sell under their business after you build up a little report with them!

There is another reason why wholesale auctions are the best sources for used cars for resale – less hassle – and this is the reason I mentioned earlier as a better method of buying inventory to sell.  Who has the time to see 10 to 100 cars to buy 1?  The car business is a numbers game.  One home run deal will not make you rich.  Many decent deals will.  Yes, you may pay a little more at a car auction than you may be able to get a car through other sources, but it will save you a lot of time and frustration.  All cars at the wholesale auctions must have a clear title or they will announce if it isn’t.

Now, it is important to note that we are talking about wholesale auctions and not retail auctions here.  Retail auctions like government seized, government surplus, etc… do exist, but there are almost never any deals to be had.  Most times the vehicles will go for close to retail or even over due to bidders caught in the moment and that have temporarily lost their sanity.  So, when you see one of those ads which still exist touting cars like Porsches and Ferraris and boats like Donzi’s that are drug seized and sold at government auction sales for $100 or so they are lying and just trying to sell you a $40 or so dollar list of government auctions which you can get for free and then find out it was a complete waste of your money! Stick to the wholesale auctions and the better established ones like Manheim and you will do far better.

Better auctions like Manheim have a green light guarantee that you have 1 hour after a sale to argue or arbitrate the purchase if something major is wrong with it.  This is not as important on newer cars, but the big money, especially for new sellers is in older cars that can be bought for between $500 and $3000 and resold for between $2000 and $7500.  These older cars can have numerous problems and issues.
