Toyota currently makes a hybrid car called the Prius, it’s a small 4 door hybrid vehicle the size of a Honda Civic give or take a little. Toyota also makes a Yaris, this is a similar size to the Prius, but uses a conventional internal combustion engine. Let’s compare the two, and see which one loses the most value. Over two years a Prius (hybrid) loses 56% of its value, whereas a Yaris (petrol) loses 53% of its value.
Hybrid cars actually lose resale value only slightly faster than the conventional cars, but for arguments sake we’ll say they both lose value at about the same speed. So why would a hybrid car lose value this quickly?
There could be a number of reasons why these cars lose value this quickly, perhaps it’s because hybrid cars start to wear out after two years or more years, well a quick search on the internet does show that after this time the batteries are expected to start to wear out and stop holding their charge as well as they used to. These batteries are very complex and expensive to replace, even just a simple AA battery is expensive, now compare this to a rechargeable AA battery, the price difference is amazing!
