A hybrid car utilises two different forms of propulsion, it uses both electric motors and the regular internal combustion engine. The idea behind a hybrid vehicle is simple, most of the energy is used to start the car and get it up to speed, once the car is at cruising speed then very little energy is needed to keep it moving. Think of momentum, once something is moving it’s easier to keep it moving. 

When the car reaches cruising speed the electric motor kicks in and supposedly pollutes the environment less and also uses less fuel.  And the brakes will recharge the batteries when applied to further reduce the need for regular fuel.

Hybrid cars are no longer prototypes, they are mass produced. Toyota, Honda, Lexus and many of the other large car companies all produce hybrid vehicles on a large scale, so there should be a constant and increasing supply of them moving to the used car market every year.

There are several reasons why you would want to own a hybrid vehicle, firstly it claims to save the environment, but it also offers you financial incentives due to the better fuel consumption and any tax breaks that are offered.

There is definitely a market for new hybrid cars, this can be seen because Ford has recently invested over 1 billion to design new hybrid vehicles in the UK alone and billions more in several other countries. As there is a huge market and demand for new hybrid vehicles (Toyota cannot fill the demand for its Prius whenever gas prices increase significantly), surely there is a market for used ones.  Matter of fact in some locals and during the post Hurricane Katrina gas crisis used hybrids like the Toyota Prius were selling for more than they were new.
