Top 5 tips to save big by purchasing a repossessed vehicle at a local car auction

By David Maillie

It can be a very difficult and lengthy process for anyone to buy a vehicle whether it be new or used. It is even more difficult to buy a used vehicle with questionable origins as in a repossessed car. But this needn’t be.  With proper checks and examinations (a Car Fax VIN check and a good used car purchase look over are sufficient) purchasing a repossessed car or vehicle can be just as worry free as buying a good, solid used car.

By buying a car that has been repossessed you can get a quality car at a substantial discount.  This is much like buying a foreclosed house.  You can get a better deal and save a ton of money.  One of the best places to buy these repossessed cars is through a specialized auction.  These auctions are held in every state.  Some are open to the public and others are for registered and licensed dealers only.  A list of these auctions can be found by just searching on Google for the appropriate sales.  Here are some great tips to help make sure you get a great deal and a reliable car:

  1. Research several models and manufacturers online.  This is your preliminary research and will help eliminate cars that have a bad history.  Many GM, Chrysler and Ford cars from the early nineties will fit this as they had a notorious history of cheap construction and low quality.  This just resulted in them having the majority of the worst ratings from sites like Consumer Reports and Edmunds.com.  Even if you found a nice car, odds are that the car will have significant problems if it is an early 90’s American made one.  Now, it is important to note that GM and Ford have made huge gains in quality in recent years.  The important point here is to eliminate problematic cars to save you time and money (Case in point – why do you think GM dropped the Aurora?  It was just a luxury car that was plagued with problems).  My advice here is to stick with highly reliable cars like the Volvo, Toyota and Honda (and I would stick to them in this order – Volvo as the best, then Toyota and Honda).
  2. A lot of your information can come from searching online.  There are numerous forums and automotive websites where actual car owners list all kinds of stuff from problems to questions to advice.  You can learn a lot here.  Some cars may have a great reliability history, but they may be very hard to work on or require costly and specialized tools.  By searching a little online as to the histories and reparability of some of these cars you will learn a lot and also further narrow your list of desired cars.
  3. It never hurts to have a knowledgeable mechanic as a friend.  This way, when you are ready to attend an auction or buy any used car you can take them along and get their expert opinion.  This is worth its weight in gold.  A good mechanic can easily identify serious problems that could cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars down the road.  They can also point out things that might seem serious and maybe only require a small, minor adjustment or low priced fix (this is where you can get some really great deals because other buyers might think the car is very problematic and stay away).
  4. Most car auctions, regardless if they sell repossessed cars or not, have online searchable databases that you can scroll through to see what cars will be running for sale and how many.  You can see their year, make, VIN #, and miles.  With this info you can look up the Car Fax or similar VIN # check.  This way you can go to the auction knowing the background of the cars you are interested in.  As a added tip, Car Fax and Experian will allow you for one price (around $20 to $30) look up unlimited vehicles for a period of usually 30 days).  Another big help with the auctions online websites is that you can usually look up past sales figures so you can actually see what other people have paid for similar cars.
  5. Always, at any auction, set a spending limit.  In the highly intensive atmosphere of an auction it is very easy to get caught up and pay too much for a vehicle.  This is why it is always good to have several cars selected so that you can literally walk away from one and know there will be more that will soon follow.  Stick to your budget as you may end up having some minor repairs and such needed on the car – like new tires or brakes and such – this should not alarm you and is quite normal.  For instance, if you are looking at a car with 40,000 miles on it, it will probably need its tires replaced if that hasn’t already been done.  It is always wise to check the brakes and other critical components of the car before you take it anywhere or start to rely on it.

Now, not all cars that run through these auctions will be repossessed cars.  That doesn’t mean the other vehicles aren’t good deals.  Just stick to your plan and check out everything as described above.  Don’t overspend and never believe anything the seller tells you – rely on your own checks and your mechanics.  Then, when everything checks out and you get a great price, you can relax and be proud that you got a great deal and a reliable car.
