What are Radar Detectors and Radar Jammers?

A Radar Detector device as it is most commonly referred to is used by motorists to identify police monitoring traffic speed and looking for speeders.  Radar detectors, along with other equipment like laser and low flying aircraft, are also used by police officers to identify the speed of drivers for ticketing purposes and in many jurisdictions to increase revenue (don’t think this isn’t true – it is routine in meetings between county and police higher ups to discuss methods of increasing revenue and speeding tickets almost always are first to be mentioned).  Personal use radar equipment is illegal in some states and for the most part these states will notify drivers of other states of their laws with signs announcing that the use of radar detectors or radar jamming equipment is against the law in their jurisdiction.

It’s probably easier to start this off with what a radar jammer is as they are much simpler and have few options – an on and an off button or just one button that does both.  Basically a radar jammer is akin to a remote control for a car or similar but bigger.  Usually most units are about the size of your palm and are black with a little red LED light on it.  When pressed on the LED light illuminates and, of course, when turned off it goes out.  When a radar jammer is turned on it sends out garbage signals which confuse and basically jam the police radar rendering any readings they may get as useless.

What is the easiest way to improve your car's safety and looks at the same time?  Headlight restoration!

This is ineffective when newer methods like laser and others are incorporated and can even get you in trouble if you get identified and caught.  As can be evidenced on TV some police officers do not take kindly to people that get them mad and using a radar jammer and getting caught for it will definitely not put you in a good light with the police.  If you are going to use one it is probably better to be parked at a gas station near the on ramp where the police officer is located or, better yet, inside and then do it from there all day long or until the cop has moved on.  If you use it on the road they can catch you.

Now, enough about radar jammers and onto radar detectors.  Radar detection equipment has changed akin to how computers have over the last 20 years – a lot.  What worked 10 to 15 years ago will easily get you caught today.  You need to stay abreast of changes and what’s new.  Also, equally important is what the local and state police are doing and what equipment they are using to catch speeders.  It is important to note that as can be seen in YouTube and Google videos along with newscasts, spot checks where a seemingly harmless bystander turns out to be a undercover brother with a radar gun turned off until right when you pass by will nail you.

Speeding and reckless driving kill, but so do cloudy, dirty and ineffective headlights!

Regardless of the equipment you have this is unavoidable, but, in almost every case this only occurs in populated areas and in city limits.  This is not known to occur much on the highway and in more desolate areas.  This is where you should use a radar detector and speed if you are going to (this is in no way to agre with or condone speeding as our position is that speeding is dangerous and can cause accidents).

The latest in technology of radar detection equipment will detect activity on multiple bands and from multiple directions.  What good would a one way detector that only looked forward do you if you had a cop 1 mile behind you with his radar gun on?  None, it would be obsolete.  Fortunately it is quite simple to find the latest and greatest advances in radar detector technology you just need to go to your localTarget or Walmart or other magazine carrying store and pick up a copy of Motortrend or Road & Track.  Usually these magazines will have numerous ads and at east one article on the latest updates, gadgets, etc… for radar detectors.  You can also find out what you need just by Googling it or searching on Yahoo or MSN for radar detector or radar detection equipment.  Basically, the rule is that you need to update your equipment every 3 years.  This will keep you up to date and ahead of most police and governmental developments which could ensnare you and end up in an expensive ticket, points for your license, or if you have too many points already, loss of your license.
