I'm sure you have heard by now about the importance of the pressure in your car's tires. Some gas stations, service stations and even new car dealerships offer nitrogen instead of air to fill your tires with. Why do they use or offer the nitrogen? Because nitrogen has been proven to be more stable, have a lower water content, and to hold the required pressure in a tire for a longer period of time. And whether or not you use nitrogen, you still should check your tires for the proper pressure at least once every 30 days.
The reason you want to check for proper air pressure in your tires is that if the pressure is low it will not only affect and decrease your fuel economy, but it could also result in an unsafe driving situation. Now the other hand, some people go to extremes (hyper milers) to get better fuel economy and so they will push the pressure over what is recommended for the tires in use. This reduces the contact friction of the tire on the road and will increase fuel economy but at the same time it decreases safe stopping speeds and in bad weather conditions that can result in very unsafe traction. So over inflation, even though it can increase fuel economy, is never recommended.
What is recommended is that you follow the manufacturer for your car's recommendations which can be found in your owner's manual and also that you follow the manufacturer of your tires recommendations. These may not be in your owner's manual, especially if you've gone with aftermarket tires. Use the manual that has come with your tires and look up your vehicle and your tires to make sure you have the optimum tire pressure.

The only tool that one needs to properly check the tire pressure is an air gauge which can be bought very cheaply. Most tire air gauges cost between one and five dollars. You can go fancy and get a digital one for $5-$10. Regardless of which you use, the best practice is to take the time at every fill up and is quickly go around and inspect all four tires.
And one important note here is do not forget your spare. You would not believe how many people never check on their spare tire until it's time to have to use it. It's kind of bogus when you're stuck inside a road with a flat and you pull out your spare and it's also flat because you never took the time to check it. You don't need this check your spare every fill up, but you should check it at least several times a year.

While checking your tires it's also a good idea to look for possible problems like bubbles, chips, impaled objects (nails, screws, metal scraps, etc.) and uneven signs of wear. All of these could easily cause a flat or a blowout. If you notice something wrong with your tire or tires then be sure and get that tire fixed or replaced immediately. Some items like nails, screws and such can be quickly repaired and usually don't require a new tire. Other items like sidewall bubbling and large chips and uneven wear can require a replacement and may indicate something is wrong with the braking system or suspension.
So your tires are important and if you take good care of them they will take good care of you. They can save young fuel economy and even indicate something else is wrong with your car. Don't skimp on your tires.
