Vehicle overheating problems could be the electric fan

If you have a late model car, most use an electric fan to cool the car engine and radiator.  The electric fan not working is probably the leading reason behind engine overheating issues that we have seen.   If this fan is inoperable or not working correctly this could easily lead to higher running temperatures when driving.  How can you tell if this is the cause of your car running hot?  Well, quite simply ask yourself these questions, “Does the car or truck run hot when sitting at idle like at a stop sign or red light and then when you get up to speed it cools down?”  “And does your car tend to run hotter with city driving (stop and go) rather than highway?”

If your car runs hot when stopped and then cools down as it gets up to highway speeds or similar you most likely have a classic case of a bad electric fan.  Now it may be the electric fan motor that needs replacing or in rare cases there might be a short causing this.  The best way to find out is pop the hood and run your car (make sure it is in neutral).  See if the electric fan turns on once the engine gets hot and watch the engine temperature indicator on your dashboard (be sure to turn the car off if it gets too hot as you don’t want to risk engine damage from overheating).  Does the fan turn on?

If the electric fan does not turn on at all you most likely need to replace the fan and motor (they usually come as one piece through most dealers and auto supply stores.  If the electric motor comes on and off randomly and doesn’t stay on to effectively cool the engine and radiator you may have an electrical problem.  An electrical issue can be hard to diagnose and unless you are properly trained in automotive repairs and such it is not wise to fool with the electrical system of your car.  It would be a better idea to take the vehicle to a trained mechanic whom can quickly locate the problem and fix it correctly and permanently (you don’t just throw electrical tape over a possible short and hope it goes away, as I’ve seen some people do).

Once when working on a friends car in Atlanta, Georgia we noticed some very small sparks from near the radiator – definite indication of a short.  This was fixed by replacing the wires that were affected (we also replaced the wiring to the headlights and followed this up by restoring the headlights with New Lite as they were quite cloudy).  It turned out that the car had been subjected to a flood and the wiring was chaffed.  This is common with flood damaged cars and is a good reason not to buy one – the wiring will go bad somewhere and probably when you least expect it to – it could result in your brake lights not working, headlights going out at night, etc… flood cars are just too dangerous and not worth the risk.  Always pull a Carfax vehicle history on any car you are thinking of buying and then also have an experienced mechanic do a used car check over to make sure there is nothing wrong with it.

So there you have it, electrical engine fans are one of the leading causes of engine overheating, how to identify it and fix it.
