Remember the old days of buying maps and having to pull over to find where you were and trying to locate it on a huge map? Then you had to switch back and forth from the front map to the one on the back or another map. Sometimes the maps weren’t even accurate as they may have been printed years ago and never updated. How about driving while trying to read the maps at the same time to get to your destination? What if you couldn't find the map you needed or the location you were searching for wasn't on the maps? Well, now things are different. There is two primary internet or online street map websites Mapquest and Google Maps which have changed it all. Instead of taking a lot of time and several maps (which easily cost $5+ each) you can now just plug in your destination and your current location and quickly get directions. The online mapping from these two websites is highly accurate down to even the most country and off beat roads. You can even choose different paths or more scenic routes to make the trip more enjoyable. The stress of wondering if the directions are correct is taken out of the picture. Both of these websites will even give you a very close figure of the time required for the entire trip and each separate road or step in the trip. So now you can figure out the departure and arrival times for your drive just like at an airport (except you won’t have all the delays airlines have or have to got through security). It’s really quite simple. You just enter the destination address. Enter your current address as the start address. And in a few seconds a complete route is set up including a complete list of all roads and directions along with mileages for each part – this makes the entire trip a no-brainer as you can easily figure out where the next turn or town or whatever will be. These online street map websites take out all the guess work and make it a cinch. Mapquest and Google Maps both have mobile capability, so you can actually get live info and maps while on the road (you can also do this with your laptop if you have a wireless card). So, with mobile capability it is almost like having GPS as you just need to find a point of reference (street sign, town sign, etc…) and you can quickly lay out a new destination at a moments notice (this works great for getting around construction traffic). In Google Maps you can even do specific direction searches for businesses like “hotels near Greensboro, NC.” Google Maps will also allow you to do satellite and hybrid maps which allow you to see a actual picture of what you are looking at. You can see the buildings, greenery, lakes, even buildings. And Mapquest even has a neat gas price locater function which will quickly find you the cheapest gas prices where ever you care to look. For instance, today 10/8/2007, the cheapest gas price in the nation is in Okmulgee, OK at $2.12 (wish my town had prices like that – ours is currently around $2.75).
So there you have it, online street mapping sites like Mapquest and Google Maps have made travel far easier and safer. You no longer need expensive maps and lots of time to read them. In just a few seconds you can have accurate directions to wherever you want to go.
