Identity theft and why its only going to get worse and what you can do to protect yourself from it
By David Maillie
Identity theft is on the rise and is only going to get worse. It has been on the news in various depictions since probably the 90’s, but it is only in the last few years that there has been a very serious explosion in its occurrence. All one has to do is look at their local newspaper or news and their will probably be some mention of it. There was even a special hour long program on it on TV called “To Catch an ID Thief.” That was one scary program and if you haven’t watched it you need to. More people need to be made aware of ID or identity theft and what can be done to protect your self from it before it will get better.
Identity theft (also commonly referred to as ID theft) is when someone other than you obtains enough personally identifying information to cause you a great deal of financial harm and make themselves a little financial windfall one person at a time. How do they get this information that is supposedly so well protected and guarded? Very easily. It could be a waiter or waitress at a local restaurant that writes down your credit card number and expiration date for later use.
It could be the clerk at your local department store. Or it could be the crook calling you on the phone and is impersonating the IRS or other financial or tax authority (like your bank or state revenue department) and they ask you to identify yourself with your social security number and other pertinent information).

The IRS, announced in a press release earlier this year, will not call you and ask you to identify yourself with social security numbers and such. This is called phishing where the identity thieves try to get you to give them the needed information so they can assume your financial identity and rob you blind. Phishing can also occur online through emails that can be made to look strikingly similar to emails you may already receive from your bank, financial institution or even Ebay.
According to the TV program “To Catch an ID Thief,” If an ID thief wants your info bad enough they will get it. So, it can’t all be stopped, but there is a lot you can do to help protect yourself and greatly lower your risks of it happening to you. Don’t sit back and think it will never happen to me or the odds are too small. Over 8 million people were stung by various identity theft exploits and crimes in 2006 and its growth has been exponential into the near future.
