For free repair info, advice, technical guides, etc… you will find countless websites and forums with loads of helpful information. Many of these will come with tips and advice from others that faced the exact same problem as you. Keep in mind, make sure you verify and look for several opinions before you try anything you see posted on the web as you will have to live with the consequences if it is wrong, doesn’t work, or makes matters worse. In my experience it is best to use the online obtained info in this order:
1) manufacturers owners manuals
2) specific or the manufacturers technical manuals
3) self diagnosis tool
4) online forums and such (and at this point it would not hurt to enlist your local mechanic or technician for their opinion)
A great hint – there are certain local watering holes mechanics tend to frequent. Buy them a few drinks and seek their advice or arrange for them to look at your car. They fix these things every day and their opinions can be invaluable. Also, most shops allow employees to work on their own cars free after hours, so once you have befriended them they could save you a lot of money, time and possible frustration. Good luck with your future car repairs and endeavors.
