Improving gas mileage
Gasoline is quite expensive these days, and how thirsty your car is can change how much your car costs to run quite considerably. The number of miles a car or truck can do per gallon of gas is a very important figure, everybody is interested in saving money plus you can help save the environment. If your MPG is too high then it’s just like burning money!
The number of miles your car or truck can do on one gallon of fuel does not just depend upon its design, it also depends partly upon your driving style. It is possible to adjust your driving style to save more fuel.
The faster you go, the more fuel your car drinks and so you should drive slower to conserve precious fuel. Saying that you obviously shouldn’t travel at snails pace, that will actually have a negative affect on fuel consumption, and it will drive other people crazy! You should drive at around 55mph and use 5th gear as much as possible. Remember to make full use of all your gears they’re there for a reason! Doing high speeds in the lower gears is very bad for fuel consumption. Speeding up and then breaking to slow down is a waste of fuel, try to use enough gas so that you can ease off and then gradually stop without having to apply the brake hard.
Restore your headlights for better safety!
The most obvious way to conserve fuel is thinking about where you have to travel to, see if you can turn multiple trips into one trip by going via one of the destinations.
Tire pressures can have a detrimental affect on gas mileage if they are too soft or too hard then too much gas may be used. Make sure that you look in your owner’s manual to find out what your tyre pressure should actually be.
If you have an air conditioner then try to avoid using it at all costs, using your air conditioner uses a lot of fuel. Try to park your car in the shade, so that it never gets too hot.
Don’t drive with the parking brake still applied, sometimes the parking brake does not come off completely and so may stay on a little bit. This adds friction and so will increase the fuel needed not to mention it will stretch your brake cable.
Don’t drive through at restaurants, leaving your engine running while you’re waiting for your food is madness! It’s better to switch off jump out of your car and go and collect it yourself. Plus you get to stretch your legs!
Cloudy headlights are not only ugly but also dangerous!
There’s no reason to rev your engine, it wastes a lot of gas. I don’t know why people do it just to impress people, and there is some urban myth that you are supposed to do it before switching your car off, well actually it doesn’t do anything it just wastes your precious fuel.
Fuel prices are continually changing try to buy fuel when the price is low. Fuel is like liquid gold! Try to drive on straight roads without many bends, this helps you because you don’t continually have to slow down and change down gears. Drive on quiet roads so you don’t always have to slow down when you catch up with the traffic ahead.
There are some additives that you can add to your fuel that are supposed to help with improving fuel consumption, how effective these are I do not know. You could try these out and decide in your own mind.
Good luck in reducing your fuel bill, I’m sure you won’t need any help deciding what to spend the extra money on!
