Well, if you ask any technical engineer or physics professor you will find out that this is true, however, the benefits do not outweigh the risks. Over inflation of your tires can and will cause premature wear, overheating and possible blowouts and other tire failures.  It can also probably void your tire warranty.  You do not have to resort to these drastic measures, just check your tires pressure regularly and fill them to the proper recommended pressure.

Another great tip is to use the internet.  There is a website called Gasbuddy.com which will provide up to date gas prices for every state and almost every city in the U.S. and providences in Canada.  With this website you can quickly find the lowest priced gas stations nearest to you.  You can even plot a trip and find where you should stop and gas up to save the most.  Being the difference between the highest and lowest in many towns can be over $.40 per gallon.  You can easily save a lot this way.  And over time $4.00 saved every time you fill up will really add up.

Another easy way to save on gas is leave the lead foot at home.  Hard driving and jack rabbit starts will lower your fuel economy by as much as 10 to 20 percent.  Speeding also does this.  For every 10 miles over the speed limit you are losing 10 percent or more of your fuel economy.  Now, this doesn’t mean you should drive 20 miles under the speed limit to save on gas – I see people do this every time the gas prices creep up.  Just like with over inflating your tires, driving under the speed limit can cause an accident and is not worth the risk.  There’s a reason why there is a speed limit and not only is it the law to abide by this, it’s to your benefit. 

There are other ideas that will add to your savings at the gas pump and with your fuel economy, like a tune up and regular servicing of your car or truck, but this is a good and immediate start to help you feel less pain when you fill up at the pump.
