It happens, you're following a truck and some dirt, debris, rocks, etc. fall off and run into your car. Usually you see this as nicks and scratches in your paint and may be little dings in the front of your car. But just like paint on your car or headlights can also get affected by this. It is not uncommon for headlights to get scratched up, cracked or even broken from road debris. So whether you need to replace your headlights because of road debris or maybe someone backed up in your car and cracked or broke your headlights, they still need to be fixed and/or replaced.
So how does one fix their headlights? First take a good look over the headlight lenses. Look to see if it really is broken or badly cracked any need of replacement or if they are just scratched or severely worn. If it is broken or severely cracked then you need to replace the headlight lenses. In many cars this means that you have to replace the whole modular headlight unit as they are created as one big unit and you can't replace just the front headlight lens. Some cars like all those do have interchangeable or removable lenses. So if your car is a Volvo or an Audi with a interchangeable removable lens then that makes it easier just after by a new lens and put it in.
If not, then you need to order a new headlight unit. You will probably find these to be pretty expensive and they can range from $300-$500 apiece at your local car dealership. It will also cost probably $100 or so in labor to have them installed, aimed and calibrated. If you're headlight lenses are just scratched or worn you can save a lot of money by restoring the headlight lens to like new condition again with New Lite headlight restoration in cleaner kits. Now, if you must replace the headlight unit it is not hard to remove the old modular headlight unit and install the new one. There are few bolts or screws you have to remove and you'll have to unplug and remove the bulbs and their wiring. If you are keeping the headlight bulbs and they were not damaged then be sure not to touch them with your bare fingers. This is because the top rated very high temperatures and the oils on your fingers that create fingerprints will cause hotspots on the outside of the bulb that will cause them to prematurely burst. Be sure and use a paper towel and do not handle hot bulbs - wait for them to cool down before attempting to remove them.
Once the bulbs are out, remove the old, damaged modular unit and then install the new unit. This won't take long and then the bulbs plug right in same as before. Most headlight bulb's have to be turned to the right to lock them in. Some HID bulbs may install slightly differently so be sure and follow the manufacturers directions or the owner's manual for your car if they came as standard. You may want to take the time now to swap out the old headlight bulbs for better, brighter and longer lasting bulbs as this will save you from replacing the bulbs in the near future (headlight bulbs do burn out on their own and do not last forever).

Once you're done with installing the new modular headlight unit or units if you're replacing both, be sure and make sure they are correctly aimed. Don't assume that new modular headlight units come correctly aimed because this is almost never the case. You still have to have them aimed and calibrated for proper and safe nighttime driving vision. You can do this by checking out whether aimed at if you walk in front of it if there ain't your knees or lower or higher. This will give you a general concept and idea as to whether they are close or far off in their aiming.
It is best to have your headlights calibrated at a repair shop so you'll have the best lighting and some states require this anyway for inspections. The last thing you want or need is to have bad lean headlights and have a hard time seeing and driving at night. You would then become a hazard to yourself and to other drivers. So now you know how to replace or fix and restore your modular headlight unit. Good luck and safe driving.
