Deep scratches and chips on your car - learn how to repair them
By David Maillie
Door dings, rock chips, bumper scrapes and a lot more are what cars get from being used everyday. These damages may either be from the stones thrown up from the passing trucks on the highway or they may just be from carelessness or arrogance of those in the parking lot or those running a grocery cart. We hate them but the thing is we can’t avoid them no matter how much we protect our cars as they are part of the wear and tear process of the cars that we own. While it is true that these damages of scratches and chips are unavoidable, the effects they bring are really getting into the car owners’ nerves as these damages do not only take away from the beauty from your car, they also expose your car to moisture, rust and the environment. Since you can’t avoid these scratches and chips, why not learn how to fix them?
Scratches and chips are unavoidable, minor damages your car gets and these minor damages are not enough reason to take your car to auto shops for paint and body repair. For sure, these shops will require you to spend fortune much more than you can just imagine. Why take it to repair shop when you can save up to ten times than what you would have to pay when you take your car to the repair shop. Fixing those chips and scratches is simple. The first thing that you should do is to find where they are and know how severe the damage is. If the damage is not too deep, you can simply polish them with the use of a cloth terry towel and cleaner wax or scratch remover. Using the towel applied with the wax or scratch remover, rub the scratch in a circular motion and polish when the wax or scratch remover dries up. If you see that the scratches and the chips are gradually decreased and eventually gone after doing the step, lucky you. You will just have to polish the affected part with a very good wax however; if you see a metal or white primer on the chips and scratches, sad to say but the cleaner wax or scratch remover may not be so effective.

There are some cars that were lacquer based painted while there are also some that were enamel based painted. The following step is only effective with lacquer based painted cars. Using a clean rag applied with a little lacquer thinner, rub the scratches or chips gently. The lacquer thinner works by covering and moving paint around the spot affected by chips and scratches. You may also do this even on the part with larger scrapes and scratches however, do not follow this tip when your car has had customized paint. This little technique has been known to literally perform miracles as it literally moves the paint arouns and when done you cannot tell the blemishes were there in the first place (obviously deep scratches and such will still show through).
Don’t lose hope if you can’t use the above step because your car has been painted with enamel based paints because there is an alternative for this. The first thing that you should do is to get the paint code of the paint that was used in your car and get a correct touch up paint that would match the paint on your car. You may find this required paint code on the door jam or in a glove box if you have a Honda car. Take the paint code to a dealer near you and get the same type of paint. This usually comes in a small bottle along with a brush that you can use to apply the paint. However, it would be better if you use a toothpick in applying the touch up paint because the brush applies the paint too broadly and this will only emphasize the scratch or chip on your car and make it stand out more. Be sure to get the correct paint as even the slightest difference will make any repairs stand out like a sore thumb.

Before painting the affected area with the touch up paint, clean the affected area first then read the directions that come with the touch up paint. Mix the paint for 5 minutes but if the touch up paint you bought is metallic, you may have to agitate more. Then, apply the touch up paint into the scratch or chip directly using the toothpick. You may have to wait for a few days to dry the touch up paint and when you are sure that it has completely dried up, prepare for polishing or waxing. Touching up the paint works well in sealing the affected area and protecting it from the more serious damages the environment might bring your car. Moreover, this method will protect your car from rusting which could eventually affect the metal sheet of your car. Remember that rust is like an incurable illness, when it starts, it may be too hard for you to stop it so it is very important for you as the car owner to be very careful and be aware of the different proper car treatment and car care and by sealing the exposed metal in scratches and nicks. By quickly identifying and fixing the nicks, scratches and chips, more serious and sever damage can easily be avoided.
