Holy cow! Dale Earnhardt Jr. "Little E" to drive with Jeff Gordon for Hendrick Motorsports
By David Maillie
In what could be the biggest upset in recent years for NASCAR and all of stock car racing, the young Earnhardt prodigy “Little E” will be racing for Rick Hendrick of the famed Hendrick Motorsports in Charlotte NC. Earlier this year due to disagreements and being unable to resign with DEI (Dale Earnhardt Inc. the legendary racing company started by the late NASCAR great and legend Dale Earnhardt) Dale Jr. (aka “Little E”) was basically up for grabs in the biggest version of a free agent daft ever known in NASCAR history. This is synonymous with Michael Jordan in his prime if he were to have become a free agent and leave the Bulls for the Hornets when they were in Charlotte NC.
Things like this never happen, until now.Currently Dale Earnhardt Junior is the most notable and recognizable of all the current racers and he has inarguably one of the largest fan bases. He has been courting several teams to include Roush and others, but ended up with legendary team owner Rick Hendrick. Rick Hendrick started his motorsports team in the 1970’s as the owner of a primarily used car dealership in Charlotte NC (City Chevrolet – his racing story and car dealership are mentioned and interwoven into the famous racing movie Days of Thunder with Tom Cruise and Meg Ryan). He was scoffed at and ridiculed, but persevered through it and has become one of the most respected and winningest teams in NASCAR history currently fielding 4 top drivers which will now include Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Hendrick Motorsports currently has 4 teams and 4 drivers fielded and so was thought to be out of contention for Dale Jr. per NASCAR’s 4 team rule. Apparently, Dale will be replacing driver Kyle Busch. No further information was available about Kyle Busch’s future or what team he may be going to. Dale Jr. was ecstatic to be on such a legendary team as Rick’s which has over 100 wins and has the second most winning driver in NASCAR history Jeff Gordon. Jeff and Dale will have much to teach each other and together will probably make an unbeatable force next season. The only problem left is to see how well Little E’s rabid fans receive this news as they apparently do not have much respect for Jeff Gordon (they currently like to throw trash at him). Maybe they will be able to play a spin on it of sorts and turn their hatred for Jeff Gordon towards another driver and team that is not owned by Hendrick Motorsports. According to Dale Earnhardt Jr., this move from DEI was not about money or product sales. It was about a quest and winning the championship – something he has yet to do and wants very badly and has been unable to do with DEI. DEI, apparently just wasn’t able to get him there and hopefully Hendrick will be better suited for this championship quest. Only time will tell, but this is surely the biggest shakeup in NASCAR racing in recent years and will surely amp up the intensity and expectations of the races next season and have fans on the edge of their seats.
