Once it is fairly smooth from using 500 or so grit sandpaper you will spray a coat of primer on the affected area (be sure to mask off the areas you don’t want sprayed and use tape and paper made specifically for this purpose as otherwise your finished job will look sloppy guaranteed). There are now good quality primers and car paints available in spray cans at most auto shops like Autozone, NAPA and PepBoys and they aren’t very expensive.
Be sure to match the proper colors required for your car (the paint code is usually inside your door jam and the employees at your local auto store or car dealer can get that for you if you can’t find it).You don’t have to resort to paint cans, you can also go full out and buy a complete spray gun setup, compressor and more and it gets expensive fast.Regardless of which way you choose, it is wise to go to a paint specialist like the folks at NAPA and find out exactly which color primer you need and whether you need primer sealer.
After you have found the right primer and paint, you will first spray a few coats of primer letting it properly dry between coats (first try it on a piece of scrap metal and perfect you horizontal spraying pattern).Be sure to spay in horizontal lines so you have more uniform coverage. After the primer has dried you will dry sand the car with 500 grit until smooth making sure the ridges, highs and lows no longer show through with a little sanding.
Now, once the primer is completely dry you will paint the affected region with the same horizontal line pattern to promote a more even and uniform application.Be sure to follow the directions on the paint can for best results.Be sure to paint at least 2 to three coats and then if desired you can spray another 2 to 3 topcoats of clear to protect the paint.A good tip, if you find the paint nozzle clogging take it off and soak it in paint thinner to clean it.Between coats you can wet sand with very fine grit wet sand paper to smooth out any scratches and imperfections. You will find that after only a few applications of paint and clear coat and wet sanding the affected area will start to look like glass.
After the paint has dried for a few days to a week (depending on the paint manufacturer’s recommendations) you can then polish and wax the bumper and your car and it will look like there never was a blemish, ding, hole, etc… (be sure to read this article for more on how to get the best possible shine from your car in the first place).Be sure not to wax and polish the car too soon as you can actually harm the paint job and even ruin it to where you would have to start all over again.
