5 Great tips on how to find cheap auto parts By David Maillie When your car is in need of repair, the last thing you want to do is fork over hundreds of dollars to your local car dealer for parts when you can easily get everything you need for 50 to 90% off. I’m not talking about small savings like 5 or 10 % here. I’m talking about how to save yourself literally hundreds on almost any car part you could need. I’m going to tell you how to do it and give you some great resources. All you need to do is read the rest of this article. I guarantee you will want to put this in your favorites or link to it for later reference.
1. First get a second opinion, many times the recommended repairs and replacement parts are completely unnecessary. Did you know that almost all franchised car dealers follow a manufacturer’s recommended replacement and servicing regimen based on the most extreme conditions and mileage regardless if they are needed or necessary? This insures the dealer gets more repairs and the manufacturer sells more over priced parts. So, by getting a second opinion you may and most likely will find your local car dealer is full of crap. Always get a second opinion from a independent mechanic.
2. Know that 99% of parts for any car are not made by the actual manufacturer. What this means is that when your car dealer posts signs stating that genuine Chevy, Honda, Ford, etc… parts are more durable they are 100% lying to you. Aftermarket parts are held to the same or even tougher standards then what was originally installed in the car. So it is okay to search outside your car dealership. You can search for the part online even and buy direct from the actual part manufacturer and not a middleman like the car dealer. Actually the car dealer buys it from the manufacturer whom buys it from the actual part manufacturer and each adds a profit and that is why car dealers have the highest prices anywhere for car parts – they are absolutely ridiculous (For more on this be sure to read our article on car repair scams)!

3. Be open to used parts. You can find tremendous deals at salvage yards. This does not mean you need to get your toolbox and pull the parts yourself, nor does it mean you are getting rusted old parts. Many salvage yards deal with only recent year cars and some only deal with certain makes like Honda, Toyota, GM, etc… Most large cities and towns have one within a half hours drive and you will save big over new parts. This is especially good for alternators, wheels, tires, etc… Many of these salvage yards have cars that have recently been in a wreck and may have only a few thousand miles on them. Maybe it was hit in the back, but the whole front end, wheels, engine, etc… look brand new. I once bought a immaculate set of 4 wheels and tires off a 2002 Mustang GT with less than 4,000 miles on it for $200 cash – the dealer wanted over $3000 for the same set!

4. You can be lazy and order the parts right off your computer and have them shipped right to your door. There are numerous online salvage dealers and this greatly opens up your choices and availability. With the advent of some online salvage search websites there is no longer anything that is unattainable even for the rarest of cars and trucks. One of these sites is Junkyarddog.com and it is quite easy to use. You submit a part request and then salvage dealers will contact you with what they have, prices and shipping costs. My personal favorite is Car-part.com. It gives you immediate prices, availability and I don’t like to wait a day or two to find out how much it will be. I have found the savings by using Car-part.com to be tremendous – usually in the 75 to 90% off or better range when compared to parts and prices from your local car dealer.

5. Become familiar with your local Craig’s List. You can find a great mechanic that will come to your house and install the parts for you so you don’t even have to get dirty. They can perform all sorts of diagnostics and repairs and the best part is HUGE SAVINGS on top of the already low prices you have now paid for parts by frequenting your local salvage yards or through online sites like Car-part.com. I have used Mechanics I have found locally through Craig’s List and found their prices so cheap and reasonable on labor that it wasn’t worth me getting dirty on the repairs. The quality of their repairs was just as good as that of the mechanics at the franchised shops and dealers and maybe even better.
That’s it. That’s all there is to it. There is nothing more that you need to know. With step 5, Craig’s List, even single mothers and those without any auto skills can save huge by having someone else do it all for you. You don’t even have to take your car to the car dealer anymore – the mechanic will come to you and you still save a ton. Did you notice that I did not include Ebay for parts above? That’s because their prices are at least twice that of car-part.com and the shipping prices are outrageous on Ebay. For car parts use the websites I listed above. Now you know how to easily take control of your expensive car repairs and save a ton and make them a whole lot more affordable. And always follow rule number one – franchised car dealers mechanics and service staff receive more training on how to make the dealer more profit, cut costs, and avoid injuries and OSHA problems than they do for working on your car or truck.
