What’s the difference between car polish and car wax?

There are many products that claim to polish the car and provide the lasting effects you get from waxing, however these often compromise on some of the areas. The best way it to apply two separate products, a polish and then a wax. Remember wax on, wax off (let it dry to a white haze and then rub it off with a clean cloth or towel)!
A pure wax does not add any shine to the car, it is just a clear protective layer that protects the shine created by using a polish.
Modern cars often are often painted with a “base/clear coat” this is where the base colour is applied to the cars body and then a clear protective coating of paint is put over the top. Some manufacturers claim that this makes waxing pointless.
Many people still wax their cars, and as long as you buy specialist products to wax a clear coat car there is certainly no harm in doing it. Synthetic paint sealants can be used to provide around half a year of protection, quite simply nothing you put on your car will put up with much washing! And if you drive through one of the automatic car washes then your wax will be ruined, none of the waxes can put up with the battering one of those machines gives!

The wax is sprayed on, it doesn’t reach deep into the paintwork. This wax may provide a temporary shine, however it doesn’t really do much. You can’t even see the wax on the glass of your car! So it must be pretty weak stuff – remember, easy on is also easy off!
Sometimes the sprayed on waxes can tarnish the gloss of the polish, so it can actually cause negative affects. A hand applied wax is far better.

A great tip from car detailing experts is to first apply car polish twice, follow this with two coats of paint sealant and then for the deep, wet look apply 2 coats of car wax (pure carnauba is best). This will give the ultimate in protection and that deep, glossy new car shine you see on new cars and at car shows.
If your car looks very bad then you could also try a process known as claying. This should be done before applying a wax. This clay is readily available under the name “Clay Magic”. It reaches deep into the paint and cleans it, claying makes your cars paintwork look as good as the day that you brought it!
