Car repair and service scams and how to avoid being scammed especially for single mothers

Now, as most people don’t have a wholesale automotive business account which allows you to buy car parts and such at wholesale, I also called the local car parts suppliers and stores and listed a range above of $250 to $427. So it definitely pays to call around as the same exact part can vary over $100 or more in price. Even then lets say you took the average or median price of $339 as maybe the cheapest price was too far a drive or maybe they didn’t have it in stock, etc… At $339 and then add the $175 (anyone can get on their local Craig’s List and in almost every city or town there are dozens of mechanics and automotive technicians looking to either supplement their day time job or embark on their own). So, lets add that up - $339 plus $175 is $514 which is still a almost $700 savings off the car dealer’s slimy and scammy service advisors quoted price of $1200.
It definitely pays to shop around and keep your wits about you. When I later recounted the story to my wife she said that’s so sad, “what about all the single mothers and people that can barely afford to provide shelter and groceries to their families?” She’s absolutely right and that is the purpose of this article – to help people form being scammed on car repair and service scams. The car dealers and similarly expensive service shops are getting enormously wealthy at the expense of those whom can least afford it.

You know, what really gets my goat? This happens all day long and every single day at probably almost every new car dealer service department and literally thousands of supposedly reputable service and repair shops (especially the franchised ones like Midas and Monroe which each tried to charge me $400 to replace a worn rotor which only cost $25 and took me 5 minutes to replace. It is important to note that in recent newscasts NBC found 5 out of 9 franchised service shops to be rampant with scams from services being charged and not performed to other fraudulent behavior). The solution is get a second and third opinion. Don’t take what the service advisor says as the best advice. They could outright lie to you as they tried with me. There is no such thing as a microscopic oil leak that requires replacement of any gasket on the engine block. If this were the case then every car new or old would need it. The lies and such from that service advisor got so deep I needed a shovel. Even for the one item that would eventually need to be replaced their prices and same with the local service shops (especially the franchised ones) were way out of wack and by calling your local parts supplier like Autozone you will save a great deal and then find a trustworthy and local mechanic whom will come to you for this and other repairs. You can easily find one on Craigs List as I did. Now I don’t really have to ever set foot in a service shop or new car dealer service department waiting room. They come to me and I know their prices upfront and they are extremely reasonable. I may have to pay a $35 service call, but its well worth it! Also if I didn’t feel like going to the local auto supply warehouse for parts the mechanic would pick up any and all parts and just charge a few bucks over cost to cover his time and expenses.
