Safety is key when working on and repairing your own car

If your car has a built in ABS (Anti Lock Braking) system, then you may need to depressurise the system before attempting to open the brake lines or replace any braking components (read the owners manual to confirm what is actually needed for your unique vehicle. If you don’t you can do a lot of damage to the braking system and possibly even yourself. In most cars you should press the brake pedal between 25 and 40 times while the ignition is turned off. Once you get past this, brake shoes are a very easy and cheap fix if you do it yourself.
Never take your car to a new car dealership for a brake repair – you will get robbed - they charge far too much for the work they perform. There are brake specialty shops and service garages which will do your brakes for about $40 to $50 per wheel which is usually much cheaper than your local car dealer. Besides, regardless what the car dealer says about genuine parts, both they and the brake specialty shops and garages get their brake pads from the same place – just one, the new car dealer, charges much more for theirs. Hint – avoid new car dealers for service on your vehicle unless it is covered under warranty as they charge far more on average than anyone else and the repair quality is the exact same.
Vehicles with fuel injection can have pressures up to 90psi in the fuel lines, never consider opening the fuel lines while the engine is still running. Even when the engine is off it can take hours for the pressure to dissipate, you should be cautious whenever opening the fuel lines, use a rag around the line that you are opening. Have a look in the owners manual for your car to find out how to correctly reduce the pressure in the fuel lines, to get this information you may need to look in the shop or owners manual which can probably be found on the internet.
