Your car insurance rates do not vary solely depending on the colour of the car, even if an insurer asks for this information it is extremely unlikely they will base a substantial part of it in your premium.  Your credit report and credit worthiness is actually one of the largest components of your insurance premium now.  Bad credit definitely means higher rates as once again research by the insurance companies has shown that drivers with bad credit are much riskier to insure and have a much higher accident and  claim rate.

People have suggested that insurers could technically know the colour of your car even without asking if they looked at the VIN number and used that to find out the colour of your car. In actual fact the colour of the car is not mentioned anywhere on the VIN number. Therefore unless the insurer actually asks what the colour of your car is they won’t know (some are now requesting a visual inspection of your car or a picture for their file).

25% of drivers actually believe that the colour of their car will greatly affect their insurance rates, but it doesn’t impact your insurance in a major way like credit worthiness.

A great hint is to switch from auto insurers like Allstate that base premiums mostly on credit to insurers like Progressive that don’t (I am not paid to endorse Progressive, but the difference is huge and can be over $1,000 back in your pocket).

Of course there are things about the car that do also have an inherent effect on your insurance quotes, these are the make of car, model, year, condition, age, engine size, and body type. The driver’s personal information and driving record is also used to identify the correct premium.
