Car buying scams both online and offline and how to protect yourself
Previous page
If you are purchasing a vehicle online never pay for anything you buy off the internet through a payment gateway that the seller himself suggests. Even if they offer to escrow the funds, don’t believe it! If the seller tries to recommend specific services to you then the chances are that they’re fake and they’ll just run off with the money. Escrow services if needed should be chosen by you the buyer.
Never use western union or moneygram to send money for anything you’ve brought online. EBay warns against such scams, and trust me they do exist. Western union and moneygram are money transfer sites that are genuine, however there is no way of getting your money back if you send money to a scammer. Western union is set up to send money back home, not to pay for items. There is little you can do if you are conned and pay through one of these. The only thing you can do if you get conned with a western union transfer is to phone their fraud department, the number is on their website.
Many sellers offer to use an escrow site, however if the car doesn’t exist then the escrow site won’t be real – and don’t say this will never happen – it does. Pretty much anyone can set up a website, what do you mean? Sure you can! But that’s not a good thing, if you spent a long time then I’m sure you could create a professional looking website. These escrow websites look legitimate as many even copy the entire pages of legitimate websites, however they are phoney, as soon as you send money through them you’ll never hear from the seller again, and you’ll certainly never see the car that you brought. This is where it pays to have a complete computer security solution like McAffee. Your security program will filter out copy and phony websites for you.
