Car bumper stickers have been around as far back as we can remember.  They probably came out as soon as cars started being mass produced at the Ford plant with the Model A or T.  Bumper stickers originally were devised as a way for companies to get free publicity.  This was a novel idea as the more cars that sported the sticker, the more people that saw the company name or motto or sales pitch, etc…  It was strictly a numbers game, the higher the number that saw the advertisement, the higher the sales would go.  Then came about the idea of using it for other things like expressing ones individuality and more.

Bumper stickers now consist of everything from political candidates and political messages to all sorts of statements from humorous to serious.  I have seen bumper stickers of NASCAR racing fans (with NASCAR legends like Dale Earnhardt and Rusty Wallace) to to pictures of Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes, peeing on a disliked symbol, name or term.  Some people forget they have a bumper sticker on their car for years and its kind of funny and often times nostalgic to read some of them – I just saw an old station wagon with a Mondale – Ferraro for white house sticker the other day.  That has to be over 20 years old.  That was the year Ronald Reagan ran for office and Ghostbusters the movie came out! 

Some older bumper stickers that are unused have actually become collectors items depending on their rarity and following or desirability.  Old John Deere stickers, for instance, can have a very high value as anything John Deere pre 1960 has a high desirability.  Anything Star Trek has a great resale value along with original Star Wars items.  All one has to do is look up bumper stickers on Google and look for rare names, vintage items, etc…  You will be amazed at what you will find.  You can even find them at antique auctions and flea markets.  I saw some popular ones of John F. Kennedy when he ran for president, Babe Ruth from the 1930’s to 1940’s, etc…  If you can name it it probably has a bumper sticker associated with it.

Aside from value, political reasoning, and antiguity or history, many bumper stickers are just a matter of self expression.  On todays highways and streets almost every car is mass produced and many look the same.  Other than difference in color and style, a bumper sticker is an easy way to add a difference and make a statement at the same time.  Yes, there are crazy bumper stickers that one can find by searching Google under weird or dirty bumper stickers.  These should be avoided as they will garner too much attention, may cause an unnecessary accident, and may even bring unwarranted or undesired attention from law enforcement – the use of these as a prank to get others in trouble should as advertised on some websites be frowned upon.

I even found one site that makes magnetic bumper placards or signs which look very similar to a bumper sticker, but are very easy to remove and do not hurt the paint or chrome finish.  As anyone who has ever tried to remove a bumper sticker can attest to, it is not easy and being that the price is very close I would go with these instead.  Think of a bumper sticker like a tattoo, it is very hard to completely remove and may ruin your cars finish.  A removable magnetic bumper placard is like a removable tattoo.  You won’t be able to tell the difference and you can change your mind as often as you like without hurting your cars finish.  So, go ahead, get a removable magnetic bumper sticker and express yourself.  Tell the world what you think and believe.
