How to remove paint and minor blemishes from your car bumper

By David Maillie

It happens when you least expect it. You park in a parking lot, shopping center, etc. and you may even take great strides to park far away from other cars so as to not get dinged, dented or scratched, but you walk back out to your car or truck and find a smear or someone else had run their car into yours and left their paint on your bumper. If you have a brand-new car or car you take good care of and keep clean this really makes you hot. Now you have a smear and possibly scratch or more on your car and you didn't even do anything. The other driver is nowhere to be seen and so what do you do?

You can call the police and make a police report. But this'll get you nothing and nowhere is no way to find someone unless there was a video camera in the vicinity and no one will even bother to take a look at that anyway. You can call your insurance and reported to your insurance company but you'll probably find that the price for the repair is underneath your deductible or close to it so they won't cover it. And even if you did or insurance to cover this repair then you'd probably find your insurance going up because you used it. That's not fair at all because you didn't even cause this accident and you end up paying for the long run of your insurance payments.

Do you have ugly, cloudy and yellowed headlights on your car or truck?

There is a better and easier way to repair most of these minor paint blemishes and smears. First clean the area of the car or bumper that has this smear on it. Use soap and water and then dry it. Then you can use a rubbing compound (be careful, though, to not used to rough harsh of a rubbing compound as you may go through too much paint too fast and even burn the paint). The best way to use rubbing compound on a car bumper is to apply it directly to the bumper in the area to be treated and then use a rotary buffer at slow speeds (high speeds will burn your paint and leave burn marks and patterns which are unsightly) to try and buff out the paint smear.

It is important that you keep the buffer pad wet and that you do not overheat the area with the paint smear. If the paint smear is difficult to get off you can also use a very high grade of specialty wet sandpaper like a 2000 grit to wet sand the area with paint smear. If you are going to wet sand be sure to keep the sandpaper wet and have a cup of water in it that you can dip the sandpaper in and rinse it with. This will remove the paint smear, but be very careful along ridge lines and contours lines as you may end up removing or going through your car's paint entirely at these points.

After wet sanding you need to follow with rubbing compound to remove any scratch lines and then follow up with the polish and then wax the area to properly protect it. Without the polish and wax the area you treated will look very dull. You can also opt you use a silicone or Teflon-based polish instead of the wax if you want a more durable finish. He wax will give you a deeper gloss but it will not last as long as a silicone or Teflon-based polish will.

Depending on the type of paint that has been smear on your car you can also use chemicals like paint thinner, acetone, and other cleaning chemicals to try and remove the paint but you have to be careful because some of these could actually ruin the paint on your car. The method used a professional repair shops is the same one I described above using rubbing compound and buffing out the paint smear. Some shops will recommend that you repaint the entire bumper or area of the paint smear. In most cases this is unnecessary and very costly compared to just buffing it out.

This tip on how to remove paint smears that are caused by other reckless drivers to your car should help you to save money on your insurance and getting your car look the way it did before some miscreant ran into it.
