What to do in a car accident
Previous page
If you’re in a serious accident you may require medical treatment, you might be unable to answer any questions and so it’s important to have a card with any important medical information written on it, especially if you’re allergic to any drugs (you can also wear a medical necklace or bracelet which the emergency personnel will initially look for).
Your own safety is paramount, whenever the accident is fairly minor you should move the cars to the side of the road before getting out to inspect the damage. You don’t want to get in the way of traffic. Most police will tell you to merge off to the side of the road where it is safe and where it won’t block or impede traffic. Obviously if your car is badly damaged and won’t move or you are seriously injured than wait for help and stay put.
If the accident immobilises your car then make sure you turn on your hazard flashers and consider setting out flares. If your car is located around a blind bend consider using some traffic cones or triangles to warn other motorists in advance. After you’ve done this, you’ve done all you can it’s important to move well out of the way in case there are any more accidents.
If you are ever involved in a serious accident you must carefully assess the situation, check that nobody who is involved is in immediate danger. Make sure that they are moved out of the way of fire, or any risk of exploding vehicles.
