As an example of what can go wrong when you buy a used car, hundreds of consumers in Washington state were recently ripped off in a large curbstoning operation.  In this operation salvage and tow cars which are normally relegated to the junk yard and being parted out were sold in the next state to unsuspecting buyers.  These cars were originally bought under false names in Oregon to make it hard to track.  Important and announced information like bad engines, transmissions and other problems were never made aware to the buyers in Washington.  These curbstoners would sell the car and without ever using their real names so when the car broke down on the buyer 5 blocks later there was no recourse available.  The curbstoners did finally get cught and had their business closed down.  But they are only one of many of these operations operating nationwide.

That is just one example that involved several hundred cars.  You also have the recent floods in Texas and Louisiana that have damaged over 100,000 cars.  These cars are getting a quick cleaning and are being resold all over the country.  It’s a big payday for the sellers as they can get them cheap and resell them for huge profits.  Many times, unless you are really mechanically inclined and know what to look for, you will never know it was in a flood until it starts to have flood or water damage symptoms like faulty wiring, lots of shorts, etc…  Flood cars are very dangerous as you never can predict what will go wrong and how it will affect the car.  But something is certain – it will fail when you least expect it (for more on this read our award winning article on flood damaged vehicles).

There are numerous other things that could happen to a car like being involved in an accident, rebuilt crash test cars, stolen cars, etc…  Did you know that if you bought a vehicle and it turns out stolen, the police will just show up one day with a wrecker or flatbed hauler and tow it off.  You will be left with nothing and be out the cash you paid for it.  If you had a loan on it that’s even worse – then you lose the car and still have to pay on it!  Now, this is all dependent on if you bought the car from a car dealer or a private seller.  Most car dealers run every car they take in on trade and or resell through a online VIN checking system like CarFax to protect themselves from fraud and so this won't happen.
