It seems that as every week goes by the gas prices just seem to be climbing higher and higher.  We aren’t even in the main driving season yet and gas is now averaging $3.65 across the nation.  Experts say it may reach $4 or even $5 this very summer.  This is where the idea of running your car either supplementally or completely on Browns gas (HHO gas) for greater fuel economy and savings has come from.

So, lets get straight to the point here, what is Browns gas and how can it help increase my car or trucks gas mileage?  Well, Browns gas is simply a gaseous mixture of hydrogen and oxygen.  This gaseous mixture comprises a 2:1 ratio of hydrogen to oxygen (same composition as with its liquid state in H2O, water).  Basically this gas is combustible whereas water is not (at least not in its liquid state).

Now, how is this gaseous mixture created?  Water can be converted from a liquid state to a gaseous state by the use of electrical current through the water from one electrode to another (one being positively charged and the other negative).  The electrical current excites the electrons of the H20 and will convert it to a gaseous mixture of both Hydrogen and oxygen.  Depending on the purity of the water and electrodes used there may be other products of this reaction like sodium and or potassium (two explosively reactive metals).

According to ideas floating around the internet and numerous ebooks and other various schemes, the idea is to create a small reaction chamber that you install in your engine compartment and then hook up to your car battery for the electrical current.  Then tubes are attached that carry the HHO (Browns gas) gas to the fuel injectors or carburetor.  It all seems quite simple to do and the claims circulating of 50% to 100% reduction in fuel costs and tremendous gains in fuel economy all make it sound like a no brainer, but is it?

Actually, there are a few major problems with this HHO or Browns gas car kit idea.  First is you are creating a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen gas.  Both of these gases are more explosive than liquid gas and are very dangerous – especially in a hot engine compartment.  What if you developed a leak somehow in your jury rigged apparatus?  To see how explosive hydrogen and oxygen gas can be just research the Hindenberg.  There’s a reason why the Department of Transportation requires warning placards on vehicles transporting any amount of these gases – they are hazardous materials.

Besides the explosive nature of these gases, lets look at the feasibility of producing HHO gas.  Well, this has already been done for us as the researchers at Myth Busters have tried this Browns gas idea and found that any container running off the car battery would only produce a tiny amount of bubbles – not nearly enough to see any change in gas mileage.  They tried it every way possible and determined that one would need a much larger and more powerful electrical current and on top of that one would need a much larger container for the water.  Far too large for the glove compartment or even the car.

The weight and size of the required apparatus would be so large that the weight alone would virtually nullify any gas or fuel savings and actually probably reduce fuel economy.  Not to mention you would probably need an eighteen wheeler to house the apparatus.  So, we can end this discussion here due to the fact that Browns gas (HHO) is unsafe and it wouldn’t work as described on any of these websites, ebooks or in the highly publicized water gas conversion kits being sold over the internet.  If it were really as easy as these schemes make it seem don’t you think everyone would be using it by now?    The idea is just not feasible for cars with current technology.
