Best spring car care tips to help you get the most out of your car or truck in Charlotte NC
By David Maillie
Flowers are blooming and warmer temperatures are already here. Pollen and allergies are starting to fill the air and take over. Its important that we don't get so caught up in enjoying the warmer weather and sunshine that we forget about routine car care that could definitely improve our fuel economy and make our cars or trucks run better and for much longer. As is commonly said an ounce of prevention is worth several pounds of cure and this definitely applies here to automobiles. Here are some great spring car care tips that will definitely help you get more out of your car or truck.
1) Electrical system. First start with your battery. Check for corrosion around the terminals. Corrosion which is commonly caused by battery acid can deteriorate the terminals and lessen the voltage from them reducing the efficiency of your battery and even drain it and place undue strain on the alternator greatly reducing its lifespan. Corrosion on the terminals and elsewhere can easily be removed with a mixture of baking soda and water and a old toothbrush or similar brushing device. The baking soda and water is a basic solution which will neutralize the battery acid and remove corrosion. Afterward you can apply anti corrosion gels and pastes (these can be bought at your local automotive store or hardware store (also at Walmart or pretty much anywhere you can purchase car batteries).
After you have taken care of the corrosion, test the battery and alternator to see if they are holding and producing the necessary charge for optimum performance of your car (see your owner's manual for the exact specifics on your vehicle). Then it is a good idea to check your fuse box for any blown fuses (some will already be obvious as the radio or lights would be out, but some may not be as readily apparent. It is a good idea to keep spare fuses in your glove box in case you need one (a complete set of spare fuses with a fuse puller is only a few dollars at your local Walmart or Autozone).
2)Lights. This goes hand in hand with the electrical system. After checking to make sure all lights work (if they don't first check the fuses and the bulbs as they are usually the reason lights don't turn on). Then check that they are properly aimed (this can easily be done by using a level driveway and garage door. Make the lights shine right back at themselves. Headlights can be easily adjusted by turning either of the adjustment knobs on the backside of the assembly. One knob does up and down, the other does right to left. Next check for headlight and rear or taillight output. Are they bright enough or so dim that they are unsafe?
