Craigslist, auto repair fraud and how to avoid getting ripped off
By David Maillie
If you are like most people you cringe at the thought of going to your local car dealer’s service department for a needed repair or even routine service. Why is this, because it’s all fine and dandy until they walk you to the cashier and you find out that you owe 10 times more than you thought you would and many times its for repair work that was not necessary, needed or even called for. Has this happened to you? You bet, on average just about every driver ends up getting taken advantage of through some degree of auto repair fraud.
Restored headlights are cleaner, safer and look great!
Regardless of whether someone stole money from you outright, as is the case in identity theft and check fraud, or whether you were taken advantage of by a slick service advisor recommending service work and replacement parts that are completely unwarranted, its still fraud and illegal. Yet, most new car dealer service departments do this every day. Why might you ask? Because of the money – big profits in the millions of dollars! Car dealers have their service advisors and staff constantly educated on how to extract every dollar out of you possible – and don’t think they don’t!
For instance, if you were to open your vehicles owners manual and turn to the section on required and routine maintenance you will find that most owners manuals have 2 different levels of maintenance recommendations – regular and then severe driving conditions. The severe category recommends sooner oil changes, parts replacements ad more. And what do the dealers do? They recommend that all drivers and their cars fall under the severe driving conditions so you have to service your car more often and this brings much higher revenues and profits.
Headlight Restoration, Repair and Cleaner from the best in the business! According to numerous sources from Consumer Reports to the car manufacturers themselves, most drivers (like 90% or more) do not qualify for severe conditions. Yet car dealers recommend this to all drivers regardless. This is a complete scam that you will see or run into if you choose to have your car serviced at a new car dealer. Car dealers and their service staff replace parts rather than fix anything. And their replacement parts are sold to you the consumer at huge markups. You can always by any auto parts far cheaper than from a new car dealer – far cheaper. The best way to avoid this new car auto repair fraud or ripoff, which can easily cost you thousands of dollars in unnecessary and unwarranted repairs and services, is to avoid new car dealers for service altogether.
It is always better to go to a reputable and local non franchised service center or mechanic. They will actually repair (not always replace) auto parts and help you get the most out of your car for the least cost. As a tip you can also check your local Craigslist for automotive services which are provided by trained mechanics and others. Many of these mechanics are the same ones you would pay top dollar for at your local name brand service centers and car dealerships and they are moonlighting on the side for some extra cash. They will provide the exact same quality services as at your local new car dealership for a tiny fraction of the cost. These people can also provide or supply low cost auto parts when needed and fix or repair auto parts that don’t really need or warrant replacing.

So, contrary to what you might have thought, auto repair fraud goes on every day and in most cases its at your local new car dealer whom is recommending unnecessary services and parts replacement as they utilize the severe driving conditions for everyone when in fact it only really applies to less than 10% of the drivers out there. To avoid new car dealer auto repair fraud use a non-franchised service center or mechanic or another good alternative is to utilize the automotive services section of your local Craigs List. So, if you must go to the new car dealer for an inspection or warranty work, fine, but when the service advisor comes out with recommendations and shows you a severe conditions recommended services list or similar tell him politely, “No thanks, Sounds like auto repair fraud and I don’t feel like being ripped off today just to line the dealers pocket with cash.”
