Check Engine Light - Properly maintaining your car and checking its engine light
By David Maillie
Is your “Service Engine” or “Check Engine” lighted up? If it is, then your engine probably needs some servicing right now. However, there is no way that you will know the problems in your engine without the help of dealership professionals who are in charge of your engine’s diagnostic test or by purchasing a OBD/OBD II auto code scanner (I would take the car to a mechanic first as it is easy to misread or misjudge automotive codes by anyone that is not properly trained in using them). Anyhow, your car seems to be running in good condition so there is nothing to fret about, right? Wrong! You could seriously hurt your vehicle and or yourself by driving around with a check engine light on – you could also be ruining your gas mileage and fuel economy.
Why does that unwanted light of your “Service Engine” or “Check Engine” light up? Well, there are many factors that may trigger it to light up. It may be because of a bad spark plug that causes the cylinder to misfire or your engine might have an O2 sensor that is not performing well or it may be caused by the air fuel ratio that is beyond the engine’s optimal parameters. In fact, whatever the cause is, you always have a cheap and easy way to find out. In where I live, I discovered that almost all of the Autozones in the area have both the OBD1 and OBD2. These are diagnostic computers used for scanning the trouble codes in the engine. These may be availed to any customers without any charge. This is around $25 up to $65 cost cut down as compared to those who are charging for the type of service.

When the computer receives any error codes, you will know a bit of what your engine problem is. Remember the error code and you may either ask someone you know who knows about the engine error codes or you may search the Internet to have an idea what these codes specifically mean for your vehicle and more importantly how much it will cost to fix. In many cases, your searches will lead you to faulty components like an O2 sensor or cylinder failure. When you find out about the problem, you may start purchasing the parts that are needed to be replaced. By doing this, you can save yourself money as everyone knows car dealers and service shops do add a big markup to any parts they provide.
Starting in 1988, most car manufacturers started equipping their cars with OBD (or OBDII in more recent cars and trucks) or on-board diagnostic codes. These diagnostics are also referred to as the trouble codes because they help diagnose and check the problems the vehicle has even before the problems get worse. If you can catch these problems early and get them fixed before they become more severe problems you can save a lot both in money and frustration. The type of on-board diagnostics that you can use in your vehicle depends on the type, make and year your vehicle was manufactured. Cars that were manufactured in the year 95 and below should be equipped with OBD 1 while those that were produced from 95 above should be equipped with OBD2. To make sure of which one of these your car uses check the owner’s manual that came with your vehicle.

When the light of your service engine or check engine lights up; either take your car into the shop or buy a hand held auto code scanner and find out what it means – it could be something as simple as not properly tightening the gas cap on newer cars or it could be something direly important. Don’t put off checking into why your check engine light came on for tomorrow otherwise you may find yourself in your car brokedown on the side of the road in the middle of the night. Remember the longer that you put it off the more it will end up costing you.
